The Lumenis LightSheer XC diode laser is considered to be the gold standard in permanent laser hair removal in the market today.
The device emits an 800-nanometre light beam for optimal safety. It protects the skin through continuous cooling of the epidermis (before, during, and after each impulse), thereby preventing burns. The device is approved by Health Canada and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States.
Laser light is absorbed by melanin, which is the pigment in hair. By heating melanin at the base of the hair follicle, the laser burns the root and prevents a new hair from growing.
1. ACTIVE GROWTH PHASE (anagen): This phase lasts for several years. Up to 85% of all hairs are in this phase at any one time. Hair in the anagen phase contains the largest amount of melanin and is, therefore, the most receptive to laser treatment.
2. TRANSITIONAL PHASE (catagen): This phase lasts about 2 weeks. Hair stops growing but does not fall out. About 3 to 4% of all hairs are in the catagen phase at any one time.
3. RESTING PHASE (telogen): This phase lasts from 5 to 6 weeks, following which hair falls out and new hair grows. About 1 to 13% of all hairs are in the telogen phase at any one time.
Since hair grows in the continuous cycles described above, several treatment sessions are required for permanent hair removal.
